Top 10 Moments From Paris Fashion Week

Gvasalia had a big (and successful) debut at Balenciaga: With such high hopes, it was anyone’s guess how the Vetements designer would fare at the helm of the almost 100-year-old house. But the collection he presented this week exceeded expectations: there were a series of couture-worthy checked suits, off-the-shoulder parkas, baggy tinsel turtleneck knits — even a patchwork floral dress with candy-cane tights. All in all, it was the biggest moment of the month.

Loewe had the most exquisite set of the week: The designer Jonathan Anderson turned the Unesco building into a cozy, well-appointed living room, filled with art and midcentury furniture. It fit well with his fall/winter 2016 collection, which Anderson said he designed with a female art collector in mind. The collection, which melded cat necklaces and a dress woven entirely from rubber bands — played perfectly off the backdrop of a Joan Miró mural.

There was a break to recognize young talent: The judging of the third LVMH prize — which every year awards 300,000 euros to a young designer — is well underway. Between the shows, there was an extraordinary cocktail party where industry veterans, editors and buyers rubbed shoulders with the young designers shortlisted for the prize. The nominees represent a strong pool of talent this year — including Grace Wales Bonner, Y/Project and Koché — and the winner will be announced in May.

Iris Apfel was the Kim Kardashian of Paris Fashion Week: The 94-year-old style star, in town to promote her “Iris in Paris” exhibition and pop-up shop at Le Bon Marché, had a busy week: she showed up at the Rick Owens and Dries Van Noten show, almost missed Dior, dined with Azzedine Alaïa and had a cocktail party thrown in her honor by U.S. ambassador to France Jane D. Hartley. For more of Apfel’s whirlwind week, read our story HERE!

In the middle of all of it, there was a high school prom: Coach came to town to host a blow-out high school party — complete with balloons, disco balls and a larger-than-life bowl of punch. Fittingly, people let loose — but what made it extra special was a surprise performance from none other than Debbie Harry.
